High stinging

Description

It is a high stinging species with important effects on humans. It is recommended to avoid all contact with this jellyfish.

The sting of this species is characterized by red zigzag lines on the skin. The pain is instantaneous and intense.

In case you have been stung by this species:
DO NOT APPLY FRESHWATER, NO PRESSURE BANDAGE, NO ALCOHOL. Seek immediate medical attention if shock or breathing difficulties occur.

1) WASH WITH SEAWATER, DO NOT RUB.
2) WASH WITH COMMERCIAL VINEGAR 3) USE A PLASTIC CARD TO REMOVE RESIDUALS OF TENTACLES.
4) APPLY HOT PACKS OR HOT WATER IMMERSION (40-45°C) 5-15 minutes.
5) REASSESS PAIN AND REAPPLY HOT PACK IF NECESSARY.
6) IF PAIN PERSISTS, CONSULT YOUR PHARMACIST OR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL – Ask for analgesic + hydrocortisone preparations (eg. Lidocaine 3-4% + hydrocortisone).

Characteristics

A clear, dome-shaped umbrela surrounded by many small red-blue tentacles. It can reach up to 8 cm in diameter. Inside the umbrela 4 gonads arranged in the shape of a maroon cross are visible.It also has fluorescent pigmentation therefore it is easily observed at night.

Frequency

Along the Catalan coast it can be found only in specific places. It does not form large swarms, but can be very abundant locally. It is observed mainly in summer and autumn.

Distribution and Habitat

It is a hydromedusa with a global distribution, that includes temperate waters of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea. In recent years, it has been very abundant off the shores of Tunisia in the Mediterranean, causing problems for the tourism industry. It is generally associated with areas with aquatic vegetation, with meadows of oceanic Posidonia oceánica.
